Herbert William Allwine Sr. and Alice Elizabeth Allwine shared a life woven with love, family, and rich history.
Herbert, born on April 8, 1909, in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 8, 1927, at the age of 18. He was stationed at Fort Casey on Whidbey Island, Washington, where fate led him to Alice Elizabeth Gookins, the daughter of Island County Sheriff Bill Gookins of Coupeville. Their connection blossomed, and on June 29, 1933, Herbert and Alice were married in Coupeville, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey together.
Alice was born on August 14, 1914, and together with Herbert, she built a loving home. The couple raised seven children: Barbara, Audrey, Eleanor, Raymond, Herbert Jr., Claudia, and Sallie.
Herbert passed away on July 29, 1962, and rests in Coupeville, Washington. Alice lived on, nurturing their family until her passing on December 26, 1992.
The Allwine family's legacy endures through a cherished tradition: gathering annually at Fort Casey on Whidbey Island, a place deeply rooted in their shared history. In loving memory of Herbert, who served there as a Morse code radio operator and cook, these reunions honor his life and service, celebrating the enduring bonds and shared heritage of the Allwine family. This year 2025 will mark the 68th reunion.
